Limestone diagenesis and petrography
Reservoir sediment contamination
My project is focused on comprehending the anomalous compaction and lithification during early burial in sedimentary basins. It aims to elucidate precisely what processes are responsible for the abrupt changes in physical properties of the sediment through documenting them in different basins, quantifying the changes, and placing them in a diagenetic context. I am examining the core descriptions from DSDP, ODP, and IODP sources to document the physical property changes, and to relate these to bulk lithology, mineralogy of cementing phases, and pore-fluid chemistry. My work fully involves 2-D and 3-D seismic data to place regional geological constraints on these anomalous compaction phenomena. The main objective is to gain a process-based understanding of the physical and chemical controls on the anomalous compaction behaviour.
